When developing an eLearning application, an authoring tool like Captivate is really what brings it all together. What is all? Video, animation, audio, graphics and a script of course.
Most authoring developers are either proficient in other software or at least have a good idea how they work, so they can better communicate with other designers and developers.
Highly recommended for you to also learn these applications:

Adobe Premiere Class
Adobe Audition Class
Optional:
Adobe After Effects
Adobe Illustrator
